Woods Says He Won’t Start Swinging Golf Clubs Until Next Year
Tiger Woods said he’s begun riding a stationary exercise bike, can’t move fast enough to catch his 13-month-old daughter, and won’t start swinging his golf clubs until next year.
Woods said things are getting a “lot better”, seven weeks after surgery on his left knee. He’s also regained some weight after dropping 10 pounds since his June 24 surgery to reconstruct his torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“I’m a lot more mobile, which is really nice”, Woods said in a monthly newsletter. I can’t catch Sam yet, but I’m getting close. As far as swinging a club, that’s not going to happen until next year. I just don’t have a choice. We simply don’t know what type of swelling there would be. Everyone’s body reacts differently.”
Woods, 32, said he completes three light stationary bike- riding sessions each day.
While he’s a long way from swinging a club, Woods said he has also resisted practicing his putting although he’s capable of doing it.
“I don’t know what the doctors are going to tell me about playing golf down the road”, he said. “I’m taking it day-to- day, week-to-week. All I’m doing every day is looking forward to my next day”. Because he has increased his mobility, Woods said he has begun to put muscle weight back on, though he’s still “pretty light”.
“I’m eating mostly raw and organic foods that provide the most nutrients”, he said.
To keep busy, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer has been working on his course design projects for courses in Dubai, where eight holes have been completed, and in North Carolina. He hopes to break ground on his North Carolina course later this year.
As for his television viewing, Woods said he has watched some of the Olympics, tuned in briefly for the British Open and PGA Championship, and watched much of the Senior British Open, where his friend John Cook was in contention.
While he has no plans to attend next month’s Ryder Cup matches in Kentucky, Woods said he will “definitely” watch and will be “pulling hard” for the U.S. team.
“I wish I could do more than root,” he said.
